3rd Annual Back-to-School Haircut Drive

Families lined up bright and early on Saturday morning to help their little ones get ready to go back to school. 30 kids were in line by 9 a.m. There were so many lined up in fact, the event actually opened doors early to accommodate the crowd.

Over 50 instructors and students with the California Barber & Beauty College provided the new looks, and the Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation gave out school supplies.

“It feels good to give back after growing up here and being able to give back,” said one barber. “Hopefully [I’ll] cut a kid's hair and he wants to give back, too.”

Larry's son, Miles Himmel, runs the foundation in honor of his dad, the legendary News 8 reporter known throughout San Diego.

“Yeah, a haircut might seem like a simple thing, but it gives kids confidence,” Miles said. “It gives kids a good look on the first day of school and most of all helps parents with the cost.”

According to Miles, over 275 kids got a haircut on Saturday with some also receiving tickets to Disneyland, Padres games and more.
